Fernando Torreschose a stunning way to score his first goalsat the Santiago Bernabéu, silencing the home crowd in the opening move of the match and then going one better by doubling his tally to give Atlético the lead again right after the break. The brace ended a four-month barren run for the Spaniard.
Torres hadn't played at the Bernabéu wearing a red-and-white striped jersey since 1st October, 2006. This was his seventh visit to the stadium that had always denied him in the past, but he broke his duck much sooner than he could have imagined, scoring in the very first minute.
More importantly, the goals will boost his confidence no end. Torres hadn't registered since 23rd September when Milan played away to Empoli. The fact that Pippo Inzaghi dropped him from the team, coupled with some physical problems in recent months, hadn't helped 'El Niño' in his efforts to get off the mark.
The light at the end of the tunnel was a long time coming for Torres but it was worth the wait. What better stage than against Atlético's fiercest rivals at the Santiago Bernabéu, where he had previously never managed to draw blood, for Torres to regain the lethal instincts that once made him one of the most feared marksmen on the planet?
His first-time finish for the opener and poise for the second goal showed that he hasn't forgotten how to put the ball into the back of the net, and he won't forget this game in a hurry.
