Twitter users from both sides of Manchester hit out at the design of the shirt following the high-profile midnight launch.
Manchester City fan Anna Kappa tweeted: 'First @ManUtd can't be bothered to have an adult women's team & now the #sexist women's shirt!'
The new kit manufacturer Adidas has defended claims that the plunging neckline on the women's version of the home shirt is sexist and inappropriate for football.
The shirt, a replica of the men's version with the exception of the noticeably lower v-shaped neckline, attracted criticism after the launch on Friday night.
'Adidas provides an adult shirt which is a replica of what the players wear,' said a spokesperson for the company.
'Based on research from fans, we also offer a women's shirt as part of our lifestyle range of products. This range has a slightly different design and fit to give fans a choice.
